Historic England

Forged, ploughed, painted, and built – England’s historic environment is unique, incredible and irreplaceable. Whether a place is listed or long forgotten, our rich and varied history helps characterise our landscape and supports our sense of identity and belonging.

Historic England helps protect and champion our heritage. We cherish both the everyday gems and the famous treasures. Photographing these places and moments in time helps provide a nostalgic and important record of our distinctive cities and regions as well as the way we encounter and enjoy them.

England’s heritage is loved and cared for by millions; our world-renowned, iconic buildings, places and customs draw visitors from all corners of the world. Our heritage stimulates creativity and culture from the great engineers and architects who have shaped our surroundings, to the celebrated artists and writers who have documented the moments and feelings it  invokes.

This category is inspired by the beauty, breadth, and brilliance of England’s history, the real rare and rousing sights which best describe who we are and where we’ve come from.

We are the public body that helps people care for, enjoy and celebrate England’s spectacular historic environment, from beaches and battlefields to parks and pie shops.

We protect, champion and save the places that define who we are and where we’ve come from as a nation. We care passionately about the stories they tell, the ideas they represent and the people who live, work and play among them.

Working with communities and specialists we share our passion, knowledge and skills to inspire interest, care and conservation, so everyone can keep enjoying and looking after the history that surrounds us all.

We help people discover the hidden gems and great places that add colour and character to our lives. We identify the most important parts of our heritage, by listing and conserving, and by speaking up for places that are at risk. We empower communities and professionals to look after their local heritage and include everyone’s history because we know every community makes a contribution that’s worth understanding and celebrating.
